Splitting

Splitting is normally done in early spring around March 15. We like to get an even earlier start around February 15. In order to make splits you need two things. Live Drones and fair weather. Temperature needs to be in the 70's and little rain. This makes good mating weather.

First start out with your hive body and top and bottom. Make your splits with two to three frames of brood with bees. Make sure one frame has eggs and the other capped over brood. Next put two frames of honey, one on each side. Fill in the rest of the space with empty frames. You can add more brood or honey if you would like to make a stronger split. This is just for the bare minimum.
